The Richard Douglas for U.S. Senate campaign announced today a six-figure advertising buy focused on statewide radio, direct mail and voter turnout phone calls as the April 3 primary nears.

The radio ads include news/talk stations WBAL and WCBM in Baltimore and those in the eastern shore, western maryland and southern Maryland and started airing this morning during drive time.

"With these commercials, more voters are realizing that Ben Cardin votes in lock step with Harry Reid to such an extent that he might as well be Nevada's third senator," said Douglas.

"Moreover, Republican primary voters are hearing another important message for the April 3 primary: it is absolutely essential that our party field a candidate who has the experience necessary to take on Ben Cardin."

The ads are built around the narrative the Douglas campaign has been emphasizing in recent weeks, namely inaction in the U.S. Senate, and incumbent Senator Ben Cardin's silence on issues including record high gas prices. The commercials also emphasize Douglas' service to the nation in the Iraq war.

The wherewithal to finance the ad campaign comes from a combination of the candidate's own finances, fundraisers with U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, who has endorsed Douglas, and the recent appointment of campaign chairman, U.S.

Ambassador Roger Noriega who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs in the George W. Bush Administration.

Meanwhile, a new "submarine" social media fundraising campaign, a theme that emphasizes Douglas' U.S. Navy service, began today. The campaign reported $61,000 in campaign contributions in the last FEC reporting period in December 31.

Accomack County Man Found Guilty

VA SHORE: After being shot five times, victim was told, 'I might as well finish you off'

ACCOMAC — An Accomack County man was found guilty of malicious maiming and a firearms charge after shooting an acquaintance five times in a 2 a.m. dispute over marijuana.

Anthony Wise, 24, of Melfa will be sentenced after a background report is completed. He claimed self-defense in the shooting.

“The defendant fired five times,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary Agar. “No other gun was produced.

There is no evidence of self defense.”


The victim, Sedric Dennis, said he was a front seat passenger in a car with two other men. The men were parked in a driveway facing the road in Rolling Acres, near Parksley.


“We were all drinking moonshine from a jug,” Dennis said.


He testified that he had an altercation with Wise earlier in the day while they were together celebrating a birthday. Dennis said Wise accused him of taking marijuana that belonged to him.


Dennis said he denied taking it. Wise seemed to accept that and said no more about it, until later.


“He (Wise) drove into Rolling Acres and got out and walked over to our vehicle,” Dennis said. Wise walked to the driver’s side and kept asking him for the missing marijuana.


Then Wise pulled out his gun pointed it in the window and shot Dennis five times.
“I was hollering,” he said. “I exited the vehicle and tried to run, but I fell because my legs gave out.”


He said Wise ran over to him and said “I might as well finish you off.”


Dennis said Wise pulled the trigger, “but it didn’t go off.”


He said the shooter got into his car and left and he asked the other men to call an ambulance, which they did.

He said he told them instead to take him to Royal Farms.


They met the ambulance there and he was transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. From there, Dennis said, he was flown by Nightingale Air Ambulance to Norfolk Sentara Hospital.


Accomack County Investigator Earl Drummond read aloud a statement from Anthony Wise, who said Dennis, the victim, brought out a big, black handgun.


“I thought it was him or me,” he told Drummond. “I was scared. I Ann’s never shot nobody.”


“It was a self-defense issue,” defense attorney Thomas Northam told the court.


“He approached the vehicle and had a pistol,” said Lewis in finding him guilty.

Bradley Colas Now Facing New Charges

A Virginia Beach police officer who stabbed two Accomack County firefighters and then shot at one of them is facing new charges.

State police tell NewsChannel 3 that Bradley Colas is now charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

NewsChannel 3 was in court last week when Colas testified that he was having a severe psychotic reaction to a common antibiotic called Biaxin.

The officer told the court that after starting the prescription, he developed tormenting hallucinations about demons.

He testified that he was compelled to race to Philadelphia to see Jesus when he crashed his car on Route 13.

He said he believed the firefighters dispatched to help him were evil.

That`s why he attacked them.

He is being held in jail without bond.

Body Recovered From Pond in Northampton County / Virginia

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY (WAVY) - The body recovered from a Northampton County pond has been sent to the Norfolk Medical Examiner for identification.

The male body was found Wednesday in a pond near Bahama Road in Cape Charles, Sheriff David Doughty said.

The Medical Examiner will also determine the individual's cause of death.

Both the Cape Charles Police Department and the Northampton Sheriff's Office are investigating the case.

Md. Family Faces Deportation, Receives Grassroots Support

SNOW HILL, Md. - Nineteen-year-old Jorge Steven Acuna, his mother Blanca and his father Jorge Sr. were reportedly held at the Worcester County Detention Center in Snow Hill. They still face possible deportation.

According to the nonprofit Casa de Maryland, the Germantown family moved to the United States and was denied asylum from political violence in Colombia. Jorge was set to graduate from Montgomery College.

Friends have started an online effort to try and raise support for the Acunas to stay in the country.

"We're just trying to serve justice because a family as good as this deserves to be here," said Jorge's best friend Erin Lundy.

Lundy visited the Acunas at the jail on Tuesday, where the family has been held for about a week now. Late in the day, Lundy confirms the Acunas were released from the jail, and that they will likely join supporters who plan on holding a rally in Rockville on Wednesday. The case is pending.  

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told WBOC in a statement: "ICE also takes discretionary actions based on the merits of a case," adding that ICE recognizes there needs to be serious solutions to the nation's "broken immigration system."

Sheriff Releases Brief Description of Bank Robber

Northampton County Sheriff David Doughty  has released a description of the suspect wanted in connection with a Tuesday morning bank robbery at 10233 Rogers Drive in Nassawadox, Virginia.    The Sheriff's Office responded to the SunTrust Bank after a 10:39 AM alarm sounded. 

Police are looking for a young  black male, approximately 5' 7" to 5' 8"  wearing a hood and baggy pants.  The robber fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.

Law enforcement units from the Exmore Police Department, Virginia State Police, Eastville Police Department, Cape Charles Police Department, the FBI and the Accomack County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.

NASA To Launch 5 Rockets In 5 Minutes

NASA is scheduled to launch five suborbital sounding rockets in just over five minutes March 15 from the Wallops Facility in Virginia as part of a study of the upper level jet stream.


Based on the approved range schedule, the launch window for March 15 is between midnight and 1:30 a.m. EDT. The backup launch days are March 16 through April 3.

The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX) will gather information needed to better understand the process responsible for the high-altitude jet stream located 60 to 65 miles above the surface of the Earth.

As part the mission, the five rockets will release a chemical tracer that will form milky, white clouds that allow scientists and the public to "see" the winds in space. These clouds may be visible for up to 20 minutes by residents from South Carolina to southern New Hampshire and Vermont.

The NASA Visitor Center will open at 10 p.m. on March 14, 2012 for public viewing.

Fingerprint Requirement Changes

CHANGE IN FINGERPRINT SERVICES FOR BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Citizens wanting their fingerprints taken for background checks or applicant requirements will need to find an electronic fingerprint capture location and will temporarily be unable to obtain those from Maryland State Police barracks, due to a change in requirements by the FBI.

Effective March 19, 2012, Maryland State Police barracks that have previously provided fingerprinting services to citizens will be unable to do so, at least temporarily. The FBI will no longer accept paper fingerprint cards. All fingerprints submitted to the FBI will need to be taken electronically.

Persons needing fingerprints can visit the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services website at http://www.dpscs.maryland.gov/  and click on the “fingerprinting services” link beneath the “quick links” column. A list of electronic fingerprinting sites is located there.

Maryland State Police barracks are in the process of converting to electronic fingerprinting. That process will not be completed however, for at least several months.

Nassawadox Bank Robbery This Morning

NASSAWADOX — Police are tracking Tuesday afternoon a suspect in connection with a robbery at the Rogers Drive SunTrust Bank location.

A police dog from the Cape Charles Police Department tracked the dog north from the bank into an open area.

Units and personnel from a number of area police offices, including State Troopers and the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, began the manhunt after the robbery of a bank here.

The SunTrust Bank at 10233 Rogers Drive, Nassawadox, was robbed at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police have established a perimeter around the bank, which is next door to Little Italy Restaurant.


State Troopers were seen north of the bank on Route 13 on the lookout, according to a witness.

Reports are that Franco Nocera, who owns the restaurant, has video of the suspect, apparently wearing a hood and sagging pants.

Traffic is still flowing on Rogers Drive.

VA Man Wanted For Murder Arrested

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. - A wanted man is behind bars after a shooting in Virginia left one man dead.

Police had been searching for Mark Smith since February 26th - after a fight at a party near Parksley ended when gunfire rang out - hitting and killing 24-year-old Vladimir Sadin.

Jakori Evans

Police had already arrested 18-year-old Jakori Evans in connection to the shooting.

Both Evans and Smith are facing multiple charges including Second Degree Murder.

**In July 2010-Felony warrant obtained by Accomack County Sheriff's Office for Mark Smith. 

Mark Smith, age 34 of Parks Street, Parksley, is charged with 2 counts of robbery, 1 count of attempted robbery, and 2 counts of use of firearm in commission of a felony.**

Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Richard Douglas noted today that  Senator Ben Cardin finally spoke up on Israel in a March 7 interview on C-Span - months after about complaining about U.S. Postal service downsizing.

"As an incumbent Senator, Ben Cardin has a bully pulpit that none of his GOP primary challengers have.  While I am glad to hear the Senator finally speak up on Israel, I disagree with his assessment that the U.S. is beholden to the international community when it comes to addressing rogue states like Iran.

Monies raised will be used to run electricity to the water tower for the purpose of stringing lights on the tower at Christimas time.  This is a tradition they have not been able to enjoy for a few years due to lack of funds.  Please feel free to give a monetary donation if you can not attend.
