Worcester County Safe Station Implements Warmline

If you (or someone you know) are seeking support related to the use of a substance, you DO NOT need to leave home to get help. Our Safe Station Program within the Worcester County Health Department implemented a warmline which is intended to act as phone support for individuals struggling and need a person to listen. While options are reduced, sometimes it helps to just have someone on the other end who has been there. We will do our best to link you with services once they return to the new normal. This line is for individuals who have non-urgent substance misuse needs in Worcester County. The warm line
is maintained by Peer Recovery Specialists who are able to provide Peer Support services over the phone.

Worcester County Animal Control 

 Spay and Neuter Clinic

Two days each month, the Worcester County Animal Control hosts a spay/neuter clinic for cats and dogs. The cost is only $100.00 for dogs and $50.00 for cats.

Rabies vaccination service will be provided for a $10.00 fee.

Appointments are required.

The Worcester County Health Department and Animal Control have TWO remaining rabies vaccination clinics for this spring.The clinics are scheduled 5:30-7 p.m.:

Thursday, May 10: Worcester County Animal Control The county continues to offer low-cost pet rabies clinics to assist citizens with keeping their pets’ protected against the ongoing problem of rabies locally. The county had four laboratory confirmed cases of rabies, each in raccoons, in February.

The cost for a rabies vaccination is $5 per pet for Worcester County residents and $10 per pet for non-Worcester County residents.

Proof of residency is required. Vaccinations are available for dogs, cats and ferrets. Below are additional requirements for the clinics:
If this is not the pet’s first rabies vaccination, written proof of the previous shot in the form of a rabies certificate must be provided in order to receive a three-year booster shot. Otherwise, a one-year shot will be given.

To receive a vaccination, dogs must be on a leash under the control of an adult, and cats and ferrets must be in a carrier or box with air holes.

Keeping pets’ required rabies vaccinations current is the best way to prevent the spread of rabies from the wild animal population to the domestic animal population.

RABID Cat Found In Stockton

Worcester County Health Department warns of rabid cat found in Stockton

Stockton, Md. (Oct. 5, 2011) – The Worcester County Health Department has confirmed an adult black cat found near the intersection of Greenbackville Road and George Island Landing Road in Stockton tested positive for rabies.

The large adult black cat was described as having a red collar that had green and yellow flowers and a bell on it.

 

Deputy Health Officer Dr. Andrea Mathias warns that any person, pet or other animal that may have had contact this cat could be at risk for rabies exposure. To report any contact with or exposure to these cats, call the Worcester County Health Department immediately at 410-641-9559. If you call after hours or on the weekend, follow the instructions on the answering machine for reporting an animal bite or rabies exposure incident to reach on-call staff.  

 

Please report any sick animals and those acting in an unusual manner since there may be additional rabid animals in this area.

 

If contact is suspected with a pet, do not handle the pet barehanded.

 

Make sure all your pets have current rabies vaccinations.

 

Do not allow pets to roam outdoors unattended and do not leave pet food, especially cat food, outdoors.

 

Residents are encouraged to talk with their neighbors and report any possible exposures.

 

If a person has been bitten he or she should seek immediate medical care. Post exposure treatment is necessary to prevent rabies.

If not prevented, rabies is fatal. If a pet has been bitten, contact your veterinarian.
