Chincoteague's "Mother Earth Festival"

The 4th Annual
MOTHER EARTH DAY Festival
Saturday May 12, 2012
10:00 a.m. ~ 4:00 p.m.
Robert Reed Park
on the waterfront downtown
CHINCOTEAGUE --Chincoteague's 4th annual Mother Earth Day Festival features family fun plus a chance to keep toxics out of our landfills by recycling old electronics.

County residents can bring computers, printers, radios, TVs -- just about anything with a plug -- plus cellphones and batteries to a collection trailer behind Sundial Books on Main Street anytime from May 6 to 12. (Large appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, are not included; please call the Town of Chincoteague to arrange pickup.)

On Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the Robert Reed Downtown Park will again be transformed into an environmental and artistic jamboree, featuring live music, arts and crafts sales, nature and environment exhibits, food, and a kids' play area. Entry to the festival is free.

Live music includes Island favorite Ruth Wyand from North Carolina, local musician Greg Shupe & Men with Issues, The Eclecticians, and the Bombay Garden Jive Club.

Families will love the educational exhibits from Wallops Island Flight Facility, the Virginia Marine Science Consor-tium's touch tank, advice from the Eastern Shore Native Plant Council, eastern shore reptiles with Master Naturalist Ruta Vaskys and Waste Watchers of the Eastern Shore.

You'll want to check out the Chincoteague Garden Club's annual plant sale and our yearly Mother Earth Day Auction.

This year the auction includes four artfully redesigned carousel ponies from the carnival and benefits the Chincoteague Island Fire Company's Building Fund.

In addition to electronics recycling, on the day of the festival, bring any "gently used" items you can no longer use to the Hospice Truck (also located behind Sundial Books).

Hospice requests clothing, kitchen and household wares, furniture and knick-knacks.

Mother Earth Day is a program of the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance (CCA), and is supported by the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Davis Disposal, the Kiwanis Club of Chincoteague, Refuge Motor Inn, and WCTG.

CCA is a nonprofit and is supported by grants from the Town of Chincoteague, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Chincoteague Island Makes America's Best Beach Towns

As the summer season starts, finding the perfect beach for sunbathing and splashing in the surf becomes a national pastime, even obsession. But what happens off the sand is just as important. While we all hope that the sun will shine every day of our vacation, it's good to know there are options if the skies open up. These ten towns are classic Americana and are packed with museums, shops, and other rainy-day diversions, plus lots of fun festivals and outdoor activities if you want to do something more active then turning the pages of the latest chick-lit release (did someone say mini-golf?). So come along and tour America's best beach towns from the California Coast to the tip of Cape Cod. Just remember to pack the sunscreen.

10. Huntington Beach, California

9. Kennebunkport, Maine

8. Traverse City, Michigan

7. Cape May, New Jersey

6. Boca Grande, Florida

5. Cannon Beach, Oregon

4. Pismo Beach, California

3. Provincetown, Massachusetts

2. Rockport, Texas

1. Chincoteague Island, Virginia
This tranquil landfall off Virginia's coast is famed for the feral Chincoteague ponies that roam nearby Assateague Island. Every July since 1925, the Pony Penning and auction floods the town with tourists there to watch the ponies gallop down Main Street. This area is a nature-lover's nirvana all year round, though, with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the

Assateague Island National Seashore, home to herons, bald eagles, and woodpeckers. If the weather is keeping you from visiting the birds' natural habitat, the Refuge Waterfowl Museum exhibits extensive wildlife murals, skipjack boat models, and wildfowl woodcarvings by renowned decoy crafters like carver-in-residence Delbert "Cigar" Daisy. Victorian inns and ice cream parlors, clam shacks serving Chincoteague oysters, and beachfront BBQs complete the Norman Rockwell picture.

Tip:
Watch rocket launches at the NASA Visitor Center at the Wallops Flight Facility where Science on a Sphere Theatre projects 3-D effects on a suspended six-foot-diameter globe, depicting the moon, Jupiter storms, and Earth as seen by astronauts.

2009 Punkin Chunkin

Three thousand local pumpkins have been delivered and the Punkin Chunkin machines have moved in for action.

This Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7 the 24th annual
Punkin Chunkin festival begins in rural Bridgeville, Delaware.

It is expected that 80,000 spectators. along with teams not only from up and down the east coast but from Michingan and as far as Colorado will attend the popular event. This year the festival grounds have been rearranged so spectators can get a closer view of the activities along with almost doubled parking.

So with the wonderful weather predicted for this weekend and if you are looking for something different to do take the ride to Bridgeville, Del. Arrange a tailgaiting party while watching the cannons fire.

The current world record for shooting a pumpkin the greatest distance was set last year by the Young Glory III team. That pumpkin traveled a distance of 4,483.51 feet.
