"Blessing of the Combines" ~ This Saturday....

The Blessing of the Combines

Collectible t-shirt for 2012  designed by Beth McGrath Cooper
Snow Hill, Maryland
Saturday August 4
Begins at 11:00 am

In preparation local farmers - Byron Hauck, Bill Figgs, Roger Richardson, Buster Powell, David Shockley, Virgil Shockley, George Lee Clayville, Jack Shockley and Lee Holloway - are shining up their combines for the Parade of Combines.

Steve Hales will introduce the keynote speaker, Delegate Mike McDermott.

Hundreds of folks gather for this annual celebration of agriculture, strolling Green Street’s booths, visiting Bank Street’s craft and food vendors, learning from Scales and Tales, checking out antique tractors and garden tractors, and taking a hay ride or a carriage ride.

Young people look forward to pony rides, the Children’s Tractor Pull, and games (and Lollipop) at the Children’s Barnyard on Pearl Street.

Adults await the Pie Eating Contest. All tap a toe to the music of The Country Grass, Rachel Allman, The Waters Family and Danny Jackson.

They head toward the Pocomoke River to admire The Wheels that Heal Car Show and "The Journey", a pontoon cruise boat. They are drawn to the sounds and scents of the Petting Barnyard’s horses, donkeys, sheep, alpaca, rabbits and chickens. They enjoy the hospitality of downtown eateries, shops, galleries and businesses.

These same folks stand silently as the Snow Hill High School Marine Corps ROTC color guard presents the American flag, Rachel Allman sings the national anthem, and Rev. Tina Whaley delivers a brief homily and then blesses the combines.

Collectible T-Shirts, designed this year by area artist Beth McGrath Cooper, are available at Snow Hill Flower and Gift Shop in downtown Snow Hill on Washington Street.

Event hours are from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. The Parade of Combines sets off at 11:15 am and will be on Green Street by 11:30 am.

NEWS RELEASE: Downtown Pocomoke Revitalization - Grand Opening, Saturday 4/21

A 2nd Time Around Celebrates its Grand Opening

Pocomoke City – 18 April 2012 – Pocomoke City Mayor Bruce Morrison proudly announces the grand opening of “A 2nd Time Around,” a new retail establishment featuring repurposed items, collectibles, thrift, records, and other vintage jewels.  This shop offers a little bit of everything for everyone.

Both natives of the area, owners Terri Darby and Dana Blanchard have spent years scouring the Eastern Shore and collecting their treasures.  Now they are opening their doors to share them with the community.  A 2nd Time around will buy, sell and trade most vintage items.

Terri and Dana are a community-oriented couple and they are receiving a warm welcome from their downtown neighbors.  Some recognize Terri from her work leading coordination of the Annual Sarah Foxwell Memorial Scholarship Ride that benefits Salisbury University’s social work program.  Many auction-goers and pickers are friendly with Dana.  Others are simply getting to know the couple through friendly daily interactions at the newly opened store.  All seem impressed with the commitment they bring to downtown development, with a renewed emphasis on both cost-effective and “green” living.

This Saturday’s grand opening is a community event.  Local business owners and public officials will be on hand and guests will be able to view a display of high school repurposing projects donated by Pocomoke High School.  It will all take place at A 2nd Time Around, at 125 Market Street (on the corner of Market & Second Streets, downtown), beginning at 2:00pm and ending at 4:00pm.  The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:15pm, and a door prize drawing at 3:45pm.  Refreshments will be served.

The store’s opening marks a milestone in the city’s efforts to attract new businesses to Pocomoke’s downtown as it repositions itself as a tourist destination.  Members of the community who are interested in learning more about A 2nd Time Around are encouraged to stop by on Saturday.  Those interested in the city’s downtown efforts in general, should contact Angela Manos, at 410-603-1178, or downtownpocomoke@gmail.com

News From The Great Pocomoke Fair

Here is some data I received concerning The Great Pocomoke Fair.  I had NO idea there could possibly be so many entries.  And maybe once and for all this will put a lid on alot questions people have had concerning the change of dates for the fair.

Please consider being a volunteer next year.

Great Pocomoke Fair
2011 Champion & Reserve Champion Winners
Narrative

The Great Pocomoke Fair is an open Fair, not a 4-H Fair. Therefore, we accept entries from the surrounding counties and states. We had entries from all three states making up the Delmarva Peninsula.

This year there were 76 participants (up from 64 in 2010) who submitted 829 entries (up from 680 in 2010) for competition. There were 38 adult participants, 14 Seniors (ages 14-18), 19 Juniors (ages 8-13), 4 Children (under 8 years old) and 1 handicapped participant.

Almost 700 entries were displayed in the grandstand building – 650 were reviewed by 6 judges on Thursday, tallied, and ribbons added by Fair opening at 5 p.m. The 49 cakes and pies that were submitted Thursday afternoon were judged Thursday evening (2 judges). There were 59 cut flower entries, 173 vegetable entries, and 155 preserving (canned goods) entries. In addition there were 77 small animals (chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits) and 54 livestock (calves, goats, sheep, swine) entries. This year animal judging occurred on Thursday evening, Friday evening, and Saturday – 131 entries reviewed by 3 judges. All of the judges for the grandstand exhibits and those tallying the entries and placing the ribbons are volunteers.

For 2011, the Great Pocomoke Fair will pay $5,944 in premiums. We will receive $1,300 from our grant from the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board. The balance we have to raise on our own. The premium checks must be issued before we can apply for our State grant.

Our kitchen made $2,066.00 and we raised $351.00 on selling the cakes and pies for a total of $2,417.00 in food sales. Someone asked a committee member why we had the food vendors instead of doing it all ourselves. Two reasons: the food vendors are all non-profits – most from the Pocomoke community and they depend on events like the Fair to raise funds for their projects – we are trying to support the Pocomoke community. #2 – VOLUNTEERS and SUMMER HEAT – we don’t have enough volunteers to prepare that much food and that kitchen is very hot in July and August – the grandstand building is not air-conditioned.

Some people thought we were crazy to change the Fair dates after 20 years. However in 2010 when we opened, Somerset schools had been open 4 days and Wicomico and Worcester were preparing to open on Monday. Somerset students were doing homework – not baking cookies and finishing craft project for the Fair. For 2011, we moved away from the opening of schools. That also meant that flowers were still blooming and vegetables were still growing and it was noticeable in the grandstand. In addition, by moving the Fair dates, at least for this year - we were not faced with an unwelcome attendee – Hurricane Irene.

By altering our entry and judging times for the livestock, for the first time our barn was full – 131 entries in all - a lot of work for Norman Ennis and his volunteers setting up the pens but a wonderful sight for the Fair committee.

The Fair dates for 2012 have been set at August 2-4, 2012. We are reviewing the schedule and discussing further modifications for 2012.

Suggestions and volunteers are welcome.

Truck and Tractor Pull At the Pocomoke Fairgrounds

-Saturday night in Pocomoke-
Lucus Oil Pro-Pulling League presented the East Coast Puller, LLC classes in:
Modified Two Wheel Drive Trucks
Modified Four Wheel Drive Trucks
Super Modified Tractors
Super Stock/Pro Stock Tractors
Sorry if you missed it!  What a wonderful crowd.  Families in attendance, farmers, fathers with sons.
Most of these spectators stayed until the last truck pulled and the great thing to see was that so many of them were actually spending money for the assortment of food that's available!

Those volunteers behind the scenes never seem to get any recognition for the good things they do but I can positively say that they worked hard......and fast!
French fries  sold by the Kiwanas Club were  great!  I have to admit that my husband and I are not big eaters away from home but last night we did.  He decided he wanted a taco.  The taco, however, was a 'walking taco'.  Hmmm....I didn't know.  My husband is a funny eater and I am always anxious for him to  try different things so I spent the $2.00.  What a unique creation that was!  A bag of fritos opened with warn chili dumped inside.  I topped it off with a hotdog  and my husband was quite pleased.

But anyway, it was a warm evening, no humidity and no threat of thunder showers.
Both sides of the grandstand were filled by night fall and so was the grand stand.  There has to be plenty of still backs around today from a night on those hard seats but I figure these people were enjoying themselves enough to stay.
This type of racing competion does not come cheap and I am thinking that people don't mind the charge of admission if what they see they enjoy.   While this is not my  favorite type of racing I do love the tractor pulls.....yes, even me.  And so do so many more which is proven by the attendence last night.

This little guy (below) stuck to his dad all evening.  He never strayed and most of the evening he and his dad were in deep discussions about what racing is all about.  I did notice that the small boy was wearing ear plugs which is a must when attending this type of racing.

Most of you that read this blog frequently are familiar with my posts on mudbogging and sand dragging along with tractor and lawn tractor pulls on a less competitive level.  I spotted this t-shirt in the crowd....
For those that don't know,  Bog Hog is a very popular mudbog truck and races at the Gumboro Mudbog.  Good to see a familiar t-shirt.

Another racing spot on Delmarva.  This is my good friend Andy from near Paronsburg.
His dad is a good racing buddy with my husband and me and they joined us last night.

Andy, at age 11, races in the Lawn Tractor Pull at Melsons Power Sports. Don't underestimate him, folks!  He KNOWS lawn mowers and how to turn them into racing machines.

And in case you didn't know Melson Power Sports is in Parsonsburg, Md. and operated by a gentleman that grew up in Pocomoke!

And here it is!!  Ohhh, the dreaded beer tent!!!
So many said it just shouldn't be done!!
Let me say this...... and DO NOT clog my blog with anonymous comments dripping with your ugly words about this.....
Those of you that were so adamately against it, for whatever reason, were WRONG!  I located my big self not far from this tent.  I went inside the tent and spoke to the person 'bartending'.  Things were quiet and I know it must really hurt alot of feelings to see me print this.  My feeling is that some of  you will be disappointed greatly that it did not succeed.

I don't know if this brought any money to the fair.  But I do know this.  I didn't see any drunks.  I did not hear any commotions.  I did not witness anyone being drug to the exit gate.  And I did not see any children standing outside while their parents went in to drink!
It was a beautiful evening.  And  it was wonderful see  so many people I had not seen in quite some time. And it was also  great to see some  of the Pocomoke City Council members in attendence along with the new mayor Bruce Morrison.

Hope you enjoyed it.

More video and photos to come...........

Sunday At The Crisfield Mud Hop

For the second year in a row the Eastern Shore Mud Racing  Association and the Crisfield Elks Lodge made the Crisfield Mud Hop happen!  Prior to last years mud hop it had been twenty years since the event had been in Crisfield.

There was plenty of food and during  and everyone agreed that the cool breeze this year was a welcomed improvement from the weather last year when humidity on that day was at a high level.  The disadvantage to the cool breeze was the drying of the track and a few  times racing was halted between classes to "make mud" and it did remedy the dusty problem for many spectators.

But spectators don't mind.  They just want want to see  racing.

As always it's wonderful to see families in attending.

A resonable admission fee is one good reason and the fact that anyone can venture into the pits to get a closer look at the trucks.
