PA Boy Dies After Smoking Synthetic Marijuana

A Pennsylvania eighth-grader who became ill after smoking synthetic marijuana and had a double lung transplant has died.

The boy's mother said that her 13-year-old son, Brandon, died Thursday morning at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh at UPMC.

The boy smoked the fake marijuana out of a plastic PEZ candy dispenser. The chemicals in the drugs caused extensive damage to his lungs.

Brandon was put on a respirator in June and had a double lung transplant in September. The boy's mother says anti-rejection drugs he'd taken since the transplants weakened his immune system and made him unable to fight a recent infection.

Pennsylvania's Governor signed a law outlawing such substances a few days after the boy smoked it. The ban took effect in August.

West Ocean City Bar Owner Dies

WEST OCEAN CITY -- The owner of 707 Sports Bar & Grill died shortly after an incident at his establishment, police said.

Detectives with the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation are looking into what happened to 63-year-old Carey Flynn of Berlin, according to Worcester County State's Attorney spokesman William McDermott.

It's unclear how the incident unfolded at about 2 a.m. Thursday. Authorities would not officially explain what happened, citing an ongoing investigation. However, several people familiar with the situation said a physical altercation was sparked when Flynn objected to someone urinating outside the bar.

While police are pursuing a suspect in connection with Flynn's death, it has yet to be determined if anything criminal occurred, and police have made no arrests nor charged anyone with a crime, he said.

Flynn was transported from the bar to Atlantic General Hospital, where he died, according to McDermott. No further information is likely to surface until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore can account for an official cause of death, which will take three to four days, McDermott said.

He declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Outside the bar on Thursday, located on Old Bridge Road, the bar's marquee read: "In remembrance of Carey." Later in the day, it was changed to simply say, "Reopen Friday."

Yellow crime scene tape was wrapped around the left side of the porch. Friends and bar employees were gathered outside on the other side of the porch. They all declined to comment about the situation, though one woman who said she was the floor manager called Flynn a great boss with "a heart of gold."

Denny Contic, founder and president of the Pittsburgh Steeler Fan Club of Ocean City that meets at the 707, said his group is tentatively planning to hold a celebration of Flynn's life before Sunday's early afternoon game against the Titans. Flynn bought the bar in 2010, and a long-running affection for the bar on the part of Steelers fans carried over.

"He's a gentleman," he said. "We have our fan club there, and he bent over backward to make us welcome. As far as the Steeler fan club, in honor of him and out of respect for him, we will stay there ... He was full of life and fun, and I would think he would want to continue that."

Last Surviving U.S. WWI Veteran Dies At 110 Year Old

Frank Buckles, the man believed to be the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I died Sunday at the age of 110 at his farm in West Virginia, surrounded by his family.

Frank Buckles, who celebrated his 110th birthday on February 1, lied about his age in order to join the army at age 16. He became one of nearly 5 million Americans who enrolled and served in the war from 1917 to 1918.

In 1941, while working as a civilian in the Phillippines, he was captured by Japanese forces and held prisoner for 38 months during World War II before being rescued by a military raid.

With Buckles' death, only a 109-year-old Australian man and a 110-year-old British woman are believed to still be alive from the estimated 65 million people who served in the war.

Tangier Island Doctor Dies

TANGIER ISLAND, Va.- Dr. David B. Nichols, the man credited for bringing health care to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay, died Thursday following a battle with cancer. He was 62.

Nichols died at his home in White Stone, Va., surrounded by family and friends.

His passing comes less than four months after his biggest dream came true- the Aug. 29 dedication of a new $1.4 million state-of-the-art medical clinic to serve the 525 residents of Tangier Island. The clinic was renamed the David B. Nichols Health Center in his honor. It replaced a clinic that was more than 50 years of age.
First by boat, then by light plane and helicopter, Nichols regularly made the 12-mile trip to Tangier Island on his day off every week for 31 years to see patients there. Nichols continued to treat the sick as the island's primary doctor even after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
