Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week

Did you know that 99% of our shelters and rescue groups currently have adoptable pets that have been at the shelters a long time and are having a harder time getting adopted?

In fact, according to our survey, these "less-adoptable" pets wait for a home nearly four times longer than the average adoptable pet does ... sometimes more than two years!

If you are interested in adopting a "Less-Adoptable-Pet contact your local SPCA.

Meet "Turtle". He's a happy little guy- now. He didn't have it so easy a while back and he's just looking for someone special. Here's what "Turtle" has to say about himself and his life........
My name is Turtle and I am a 2.5 year old terrier neutered male. I am a special boy who will need a special home. I am a sweet little boy who loves squeaky toys and I enjoy being with other gentle dogs. I am shy with new people and take a little time to warm up to them. I have not had much contact from people-I spent my entire life in a small pen with my 2 siblings and they beat me up a lot.

The pen we lived in was never cleaned at all. When the nice Animal Control lady came to get us that day, we were ankle deep in stuff I'd rather not name. The people just threw food in to the pen and the strong dogs got most of it (I was not the strong dog). I have never growled, grumbled or bared my teeth at the people who take care of me now.

They walk me on a leash and I walk just fine, and sometimes I get toted outside for potty or recess. There's even one person here whom I can boss around. I have been neutered and am current on my shots and wormings. I am on heartworm prevention. I am a small boy weighing only 18 lbs.

I am better suited to a family with no small children because of my timidness; this means I can't be adopted into a home with children, unless they are in their late teens. I know it will be a very special person who takes me into their life and home. It may take some time for them to find me, but hey, it's not so bad here. The climate is controlled, I have my own kennel with a bed in it, 2 meals a day, 3 outside breaks daily with my doggie friends and people who come sit with me and cuddle. Oh yeah, and plenty of squeaky toys and treats. I could do without the baths, but it's a small price to pay over the life I had before.

Maybe I will see some of you this week. I sure hope so!

JUNE Is Adopt A Cat Month

Each spring during “kitten season,” thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters across the country. That means your local shelter has tons of cute, cuddly newborns, in addition to all the mellow, older cats and everything in between. And the shelter staff are ready to help you adopt your very first cat — or to bring home a friend for another beloved cat!

CHECKLIST FOR ADOPTING A CAT

If you're thinking about adopting a cat, consider taking home two.

Find a cat whose personality compliments yours.

Pick out a veterinarian ahead of time and schedule a visit within the first few days following the adoption.

Make sure everyone in the house is prepared to have a cat before it comes home.

Budget for the short- and long-term costs of a cat.

Stock up on supplies before the cat arrives.

Cat-proof your home.

Go slowly when introducing your cat to new friends and family.

Be sure to include your new pet in your family’s emergency plan.

If you’re considering giving a cat as a gift, make sure the recipient is an active participant in the adoption process.

You Can Help These Homeless Animals In So Many Ways.....

The SPCA Eastern Shore is  still accepting monetary donations for roof repairs  so the animals that live there  and those that work there can stay dry.  This is quite an expense so they have asked the public to be kind enough to donate.

The SPCA Eastern Shore located in  Onley, Virginia is a no-kill facility.  They provide food, shelter,  and medical care to the animals as they wait for adoption into a   forever home.  All this is very costly and the SPCA Eastern Shore runs its facility with donations from people like me and you and by sponsoring fund raisers.

If you would like to send a donation of any amount go to this website for the necessary information or find them on facebook.

SPCA Eastern Shore Needs Everyones Help

Dear SPCA Eastern Shore Friends:

We know how many solicitations we all get, no matter what time of year. At the SPCA, since we can only count on your contributions and our fund raisers to help us care for our No-Kill shelter animals, we sometimes put off important projects until they are critical. We're facing one of those situations now.

We asked a roofer to try and help us identify why we were getting some leaks around the ventilation ducts. When he went up on the roof to check and repair these two leaks, he found the entire roof in bad shape. Nails are protruding through the shingles, the shingles are peeling and falling apart and some of the roofing plywood needs to be removed and replaced. In short, we need to spend approximately $18,000.00 to replace the roof, depending on the amount of substructure that need to be replaced. We have already received four bids.

Our question to our many supporters is, "Can you help us keep our shelter pets dry?"
Built in 1990, the SPCA Eastern Shore shelter is structurally sound but in need of some repairs and improvements. We have had some plumbing problems that have been fixed and we are working on fixing the heating and air conditioning which are all critical for our pets, staff and visitors. But we can't keep patching the roof beyond a certain point and that point has been reached.

We DON'T want to have to cut back on the number of pets we can shelter so we're asking for your help. We will replace the roof but we want to do it with the least interruption of services.

We ARE fortunate to have a matching funds donor that is offering us $5,000.00 if we can raise an additional $10,000.00 which would get us more than half way to our goal. If you can help, please do so by sending your donation to the SPCA Eastern Shore at:

26528 Lankford Hwy.
PO Box 164
Onley, VA 23418

OR:

Go to our web site:
http://www.shorespca.com/ and donate through our secure paypal account. Under your shipping information there is a place to make a note, just add ROOF and you can rest assured your donation will go directly to the roofing fund.

OR:

Call us @ 757-787-7385 for more information.

Thank you for helping us to keep our shelter pets dry!

From the
SPCA Eastern Shore Virginia

Since the SPCA Eastern Shore is a private No-Kill shelter, fundraising is our main source of revenue. We receive NO State or Federal funds! So, if you are unable to attend the 23rd Annual SPCA Ball this Saturday you may wish to contribute another way.

"Support the SPCA's Murphy's Fund"
Murphy's Fund was created so we would have money in place for extraordinary medical needs here at the shelter. ...Most of the money in this account has been used to treat dogs who are positive for heartworms making it easier for those dogs to be adopted. 20% of the dogs we take in have heartworms and the average cost to treat them is around $500 per dog. When we have funds in this account, we can offer to cover this cost for a prospective adopter. At this time, these funds are depleted. If you'd like to make a donation where you know exactly how the money will be used, please consider donating to Murphy's Fund.

For your convience we have a paypal account on our webpage. Donations are tax deductible! Thank you for your help!
