The Pocomoke Public Eye pauses on this MEMORIAL DAY to ask that we keep in mind the service and sacrifices of all Veterans of our military services from all conflicts, and in peacetime as well, on behalf of our freedoms and freedom for others.

STATE POLICE MEMORIAL DAY INITIATIVES YIELD RESULTS

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Troopers’ enforcement initiatives throughout the state yield significant results this Memorial Day weekend.

The Maryland State Police conducted traffic enforcement initiatives throughout the state during this unofficial start to the summer travel season. During this Memorial Day weekend, all 22 state police installations made their presence known. As troopers made numerous traffic stops focused on impaired or distracted drivers, aggressive and speeding motorists, as well as those who were not properly seat belted

During this four day weekend over 9,700 vehicles were stopped by troopers. Preliminary statistics revealed approximately 6,828 traffic citations were issued along with approximately 5,164 warnings. In addition, 102 motorists were arrested for impaired driving, 51 people were arrested for various drug offenses and 73 were arrested for various other criminal violations. Additional initiatives will continue throughout the summer travel season.

The Maryland State Police encourage motorists to plan ahead, be considerate, courteous and patient while traveling. Always reduce as many distractions as possible while driving. If you find yourself impaired, call a friend or family member, or use public transportation. If you see a driver you think is impaired or driving their vehicle in an unsafe manner, keep a safe distance and contact law enforcement.

The additional State Police patrols are in support of the Maryland Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiatives to reduce crashes on the roadways. The overtime funding for additional patrols was provided by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

To our men and women in uniforms of the military that once served to protect this great country of America, and to those who continune to serve and protect, it is because of your sacrifices that we all enjoy freedom.

You are not forgotten.

You don't have to love America as much as most of us do but you SHOULD be grateful to those men and women serving our country daily so that you may have that option.

Please continue to support and pray for our men and women serving in the military and for their families that must endure the days that turn into weeks, then months without their loved ones.......

Cub Scouts Honor Veterans

You just can't say enough about these wonderful young men.


PARKSLEY -- The members of local Cub Scout Pack 300 honored nearly 300 veterans graves in the Parksley area this Memorial Day. The graves were located in the Liberty Cemetery and the Parksley Town Cemetery

Typically during Memorial Day and Veterans Day, local VFW and American Legion posts will honor fallen soldiers and veterans by placing a small U.S. flag at the headstone of each grave.

Pack 300 sought out the opportunity to assist with this task this year in Parksley. Much to the dismay of the pack leaders, the Parksley cemeteries were not being honored. The pack decided it was time to act and took up the task themselves.

Thanks to generous donations by the Parksley Volunteer Fire Company, the Town of Parksley, Jaxon's, Darcy's Sport Shop, St. Francis Thrift Store, Visual Changes, What's Your Fancy and Russell's Formal and Bridal, the pack was able to purchase flags for the graves. Each marked grave was visited, a flag placed and a salute was given.

With the recent vandalism in the Parksley Cemetery, the pack leaders thought it fitting to teach the Scouts that a cemetery is a reverent and honored place.
The new flags bring a bit of color and patriotism back to the cemetery. With veterans spanning the Civil War up to the recent Gulf War, the boys were given a history lesson in the events and people that helped keep this nation free.

It is the hope of Pack 300 to make this a tradition within the pack and local community for years to come. The pack intends to return for Veterans Day in September.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

(AP) - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the scene of
a solemn ceremony today where the names of six American servicemen
were recently added to The Wall.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, will
remember the men and women who have fallen in service to their
country during the annual observance.

The Memorial Fund website says the Memorial Day ceremony is
hosted yearly by the Fund and the National Park Service to pay
tribute to members of America's armed forces who have made the
ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam and in all conflicts.

The six servicemen are: Lance Cpl. John E. Granville, USMC, Los
Angeles; Lance Cpl. Clayton K. Hough Jr., USMC, Holyoke, Mass.;
Capt. Edward F. Miles, USA, Manhasset, N.Y.; Sgt. Michael J.
Morehouse, USA, Covington, Ky.; Lt. Col. William L. Taylor, USA,
Tampa, Fla. and Cpl. Ronald M. Vivona, USMC, Suffolk, N.Y.

"Thank A Veteran Night" At American Legion Post No. 93

POCOMOKE CITY -- In celebration of Memorial Day, the American Legion Post No. 93 of Pocomoke City, Md., will sponsor a "Thank a Veteran Night" on Friday, May 28.

Guest speakers will include Pocomoke's Mayor Mike McDermott and Tim Corbin of Pocomoke City. Corbin will share some of his many stories from his days as a pilot for former President George W. Bush.

Dinner for this event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and speakers will follow. Everyone is invited to come and show his or her support for our men and women in uniform.

Veterans, friends and family members of American Legion Post No. 93 will also place American flags on the grave sites of fallen veterans on Thursday, May 27. To participate, meet at the American Legion Post No. 93 at 5 p.m.
