 3--Clean off headlights and turn signals so you can see and be seen.

 

 4--Reduce speed and keep your headlights on low beam. High beams will cause glare and affect your ability to see.

 

 5--Drive at a speed that matches the prevailing visibility, traffic, and road conditions.

 

 6--Leave additional space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

 

 7--Use safety belts. With restraints you have better vehicle control and you can react with more precision.

 

 8--Accept the fact that the going may be slow and there will be delays and inconveniences. Resign yourself to a slower pace. Relax and concentrate on your driving. It's better to take more time and arrive safely. Use common sense.

5 Firefighters From Sussex County Delaware Arrested

 

On October 4, 2013 around 1:15 am Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were alerted by a member of the Bishopville Community that several people were riding around in a dark colored truck smashing mailboxes. 

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office along with Troopers from the Maryland State Police Barrack in Berlin began converging on the Bishopville Community. 

A Trooper from the State Police located a dark colored pick-up truck traveling on Saint Martin’s Neck Road near Route 90.  The Trooper stopped the truck and upon approaching the vehicle he located 4 people in the bed of the truck along with the driver

They were identified as, Stewart William Pryor,  28, of Millsboro, De., Dylan Lee Sharp,  19,  of Milton, De., Franklin Adam Martin,  23,  of Milton, De., Sean James MaGee,  23,  of Selbyville, De, Addison Hill-Bittner,  22,  of Rehoboth De.

Also in the truck bed was 29 watermelons. 

While one Deputy assisted the Trooper, another began traveling the roads of Bishopville. 

Through the Sheriff’s Office investigation a total of 14 US Mailboxes, 1 Waste Management Trash Can, and 1 sign for a Church Parsonage were located damaged. 

The investigation revealed that the suspects were riding along Bishopville Road and Saint Martin’s Neck Road throwing water melons at mailboxes in an attempt to destroy them. 

During their initial interviews all 5 identified themselves as Firefighters from Sussex County Delaware. 

All the subjects were arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property and are awaiting trial.

STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL SHOOTING

STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL SHOOTING ON I-97 IN ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY

(Gambrills, MD) Maryland State Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred after an alleged road rage incident on Interstate 97 in Anne Arundel County last night.

The deceased is identified as Joseph Harvey, Junior, 36, of the 400-block of Old Mill Road in Millersville, Maryland. Harvey was the driver of a green Honda Accord which was parked on the shoulder at the time of the incident. Harvey was transported to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect is identified as Joseph Walker, 40, of the unit block of Cambridge Court in East Ampton, New Jersey. Walker was the operator of a gold Kia minivan which was also parked on the shoulder at the time of the incident.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. last night, troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack responded to a shooting which allegedly occurred on the shoulder of the ramp from northbound Route 3 to Interstate 97. Police received information that a road rage incident had occurred between the two vehicles, prior to both vehicles pulling over on to the shoulder where the shooting occurred.

The preliminary investigation indicates two men, Harvey and a passenger in his vehicle, exited the Honda after both vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of I-97. Police believe Harvey approached Walker’s minivan, while his passenger remained standing near the Honda. Walker’s vehicle was parked about 100-150 feet behind the Honda.

As Harvey approached, Walker exited the driver’s side of his minivan and allegedly announced that he was a police officer. Harvey continued to approach Walker in a reportedly aggressive manner.

Walker then brandished a firearm and shot in the direction of the two men, injuring Harvey. Harvey’s passenger was not injured.

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and immediately began medical treatment on Harvey. Harvey was then transported by ambulance to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Walker was also transported by ambulance to Baltimore Washington Medical Center where he remains in police custody. Harvey’s passenger was taken to Glen Burnie Barrack for questioning. He was unharmed in the incident.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit continue to interview motorists who may have witnessed the driving behaviors of both Harvey and Walker prior to the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Maryland State Police at the Glen Burnie Barrack at (410) 761-5130.

Homicide Unit investigators and troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack were assisted by officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department and emergency service providers from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. State Police crime scene technicians processed the scene for evidence. Personnel from the State Highway Administration responded to assist with traffic detours.

The Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney has been notified and will be updated as more information becomes available. The investigation continues…

STATE POLICE MEMORIAL DAY INITIATIVES YIELD RESULTS

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Troopers’ enforcement initiatives throughout the state yield significant results this Memorial Day weekend.

The Maryland State Police conducted traffic enforcement initiatives throughout the state during this unofficial start to the summer travel season. During this Memorial Day weekend, all 22 state police installations made their presence known. As troopers made numerous traffic stops focused on impaired or distracted drivers, aggressive and speeding motorists, as well as those who were not properly seat belted

During this four day weekend over 9,700 vehicles were stopped by troopers. Preliminary statistics revealed approximately 6,828 traffic citations were issued along with approximately 5,164 warnings. In addition, 102 motorists were arrested for impaired driving, 51 people were arrested for various drug offenses and 73 were arrested for various other criminal violations. Additional initiatives will continue throughout the summer travel season.

The Maryland State Police encourage motorists to plan ahead, be considerate, courteous and patient while traveling. Always reduce as many distractions as possible while driving. If you find yourself impaired, call a friend or family member, or use public transportation. If you see a driver you think is impaired or driving their vehicle in an unsafe manner, keep a safe distance and contact law enforcement.

The additional State Police patrols are in support of the Maryland Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiatives to reduce crashes on the roadways. The overtime funding for additional patrols was provided by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

HARFORD COUNTY MAN COMMITS SUICIDE ON A TRAFFIC STOP

(ESSEX, MD) – State Police are investigating the death of a Harford County man who committed suicide yesterday afternoon while on a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in Baltimore County.

The deceased is identified as Scott Kampes, 23, of the 1800 block of Oxford Square in Bel Air, Maryland. He was operating a 1999 Saturn at the time of the incident. Emergency medical personnel from Baltimore County Fire Department transported Kampes to Franklin Square Hospital where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel. An autopsy is being conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. yesterday, troopers from the JFK Barrack received a call for a stolen vehicle from a relative of Kampes, who had been following him. Information indicated the vehicle was traveling towards Interstate 95.

Troopers located the vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 95 north of White Marsh Boulevard in Baltimore County. A traffic stop was conducted by a trooper from the JFK Barrack who immediately made contact with the driver, Scott Kampes.

After securing the keys from Kampes’ vehicle, the trooper returned to his patrol car to speak with the relative who had been following Kampes. The relative was parked in front of Kampes’ vehicle and the trooper’s marked patrol car. Kampes had remained in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

Moments later, a back up trooper arrived, and after ensuring the other trooper was okay, approached the Saturn and found Kampes slumped in the driver’s seat with trauma to his head. A Ruger .22 caliber semi-auto handgun was found inside on his lap.

Emergency medical personnel were immediately requested and arrived on scene. Kampes was transported to Franklin Square Hospital where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Investigators from the JFK Barrack responded and are conducting the investigation. Preliminary investigation indicated the 1999 Saturn belongs to Kampes’ grandparents. He did not have permission to use the car.

Troopers are investigating how Kampes obtained the gun. Investigators have learned Kampes had recently threatened suicide.

The investigation is ongoing.

STATEMENT RE: MARYLAND STATE POLICE INVESTIGATION INTO BALTIMORE POLICE ACADEMY SHOOTING

This statement is issued in response to inquiries regarding the status and scope of the Maryland State Police investigation into the shooting that occurred February 12, 2013 in Owings Mills, during a Baltimore Police Academy training exercise.

This criminal investigation is being conducted by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, which also conducts criminal investigations into all police shootings involving Maryland state troopers and allied police departments when requested. Homicide Unit investigators are being assisted by State Police investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau and crime scene technicians and scientists from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

State Police investigators have conducted and are continuing to conduct interviews with persons who were at the shooting scene, as well as anyone who may have information related to what occurred. In addition, evidence collected from the scene will be analyzed and reviewed in an effort to corroborate witness information. State Police investigators are receiving full cooperation from Baltimore Police Department personnel.

The Maryland State Police investigation is being conducted as a criminal investigation with the purpose of determining if a crime occurred and who was responsible for that crime. The Maryland State Police is not conducting an administrative investigation. An administrative investigation examines the adherence of personnel to department policies and procedures.

Maryland State Police investigators will conduct a thorough, detailed, and appropriate criminal investigation. As a result, a prediction of when the criminal investigation will be complete cannot be made. Based on the circumstances known at this point, there is no doubt the criminal investigation will take at least weeks.

When the State Police criminal investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. That office will determine any action taken based on the results of the criminal investigation.

To maintain the integrity of this criminal investigation, the Maryland State Police will not make further public comment or provide developing details as the investigation progresses. This is State Police policy regarding ongoing criminal investigations.

SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR MURDER OF FREDERICK CO. MAN

(NEW YORK, NY) – An Anne Arundel County man was arrested early this morning at a New York airport after a warrant was issued charging him with the murder of a Frederick County man whose body was found in the trunk of his car late last year.

The suspect is identified as Michael A. Stahlnecker, 51, of the 1700-block of Fallsway Drive, Crofton, Md. He is charged on a warrant from the District Court of Maryland for Anne Arundel County with first degree murder, second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/violent crime.
Stahlnecker was arrested shortly before 6:00 a.m. today by New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police, special agents from ICE Homeland Security Investigations, and the US Marshals Service, as he prepared to board a flight at the JFK International Airport. Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, the State Apprehension Team, and the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force were with federal agents and Port Authority Police when the arrest was made. Stahlnecker is currently held on a fugitive warrant in New York pending extradition proceedings to return him to Maryland.

The victim is identified as John P. Ryan, 37, of Frederick, Md. His body was found in his 2007 Lexus in a parking lot in the 15000-block of Somerville Drive, Derwood, Md., on the afternoon of December 3, 2012. Police had been searching for Ryan since his wife reported him missing to the Frederick Police Department on November 29, 2012.

Since the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit became involved with this investigation, investigators have worked closely with the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force. Task force investigators had initiated an investigation in the summer of 2012 into allegations that Ryan and associates were involved in the importation and distribution of marijuana. Stahlnecker was identified as a close associate of Ryan’s in this operation.
State Police homicide investigators believe Ryan had a meeting scheduled with Stahlnecker on the morning of November 28, 2012, at a warehouse leased by the suspect in the 3300-block of Laurel Fort Meade Road, Laurel, Md. A search warrant served at the address resulted in the recovery of Ryan’s blood near the rear loading dock and on the bristles of a broom outside the rear of the business.

Investigators believe evidence indicates Ryan was shot at the warehouse location and then driven in his car to the address in Montgomery County where his body was found in the trunk. A motive has not been confirmed at this time, however investigators determined Stahlnecker owed large amounts of money to several persons.

The investigation is continuing.

Apparent Homicide of State Prison Inmate Under Investigation

STATE PRISON INMATE DEATH UNDER INVESTIGATION

(CUMBERLAND, MD) – Maryland State Police and Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services investigators are continuing their investigation into the apparent homicide of an inmate that occurred early this morning at a state prison in Allegany County.

The victim is identified as Ricky Bailey, 51, who was an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution. According to prison officials, Bailey was serving a sentence of life without parole.

A suspect has been identified and is an inmate at the same correctional facility. Charges against him are pending. He will be identified publicly when charges are filed.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators were summoned to the North Branch Correctional Institution by prison officials this morning to conduct the investigation. They are being assisted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigations Unit.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 4:00 a.m. today, inmates in the housing unit were having breakfast delivered to their cells. An inmate told correctional officers that his cell mate needed to be removed from the cell. Officers entered the cell and found Bailey seated at the rear of the cell, leaning on the lower bunk.

Officers determined Bailey was unresponsive and appeared to have sustained injuries to his head, neck and extremities. Prison medical staff responded and began resuscitation efforts. An ambulance was summoned and responded to the prison from Cumberland. Bailey was pronounced deceased at the scene.

State Police crime scene technicians responded to the scene and processed the cell for evidence. Investigators are continuing to interview correctional officers and inmates. A specific cause of death is not known at this time. The victim’s body will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine a cause and manner of death.

The investigation is continuing.

The public service announcement entries, in both the radio and television categories, were required to focus on new trends in auto theft.

Contrary to the belief, auto thieves do not focus solely on new vehicles. Award recipients produced thirty second spots that will be used in a media campaign to reach a target audience who is unfamiliar with the rapidly growing criminal enterprise. The PSA’s will be made available to all media for broadcast.

Grandmother Foils Grandson's Kidnapping/Carjacking Plans

(WHITE MARSH, MD) – A grandmother’s use of her in-car navigation assistant helped her foil her grandson’s attempted trip to New York with her car and with her and three other grandchildren along for the ride against their will this weekend along Interstate 95 in Baltimore County.

The accused is identified as Darius T. Johnson, 22, of Baltimore, Md. After consultation with the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office, Johnson was charged with kidnapping, kidnapping of a child under 16, false imprisonment, carjacking, second degree assault, unauthorized use of motor vehicle, and theft over $10,000. He was taken before a Baltimore County District Court commissioner and held at the county detention center on $ 500,000 secured bond.

At about 5:30 p.m. on August 25, 2012, Maryland State Police from the JFK Highway Barrack responded to northbound I-95 near Abingdon for the report of a crash. When they arrived they found no crash, but found the victim, Ardella Eaddy, 68, of Baltimore, and three of her grandchildren, ages 4, 8, and 12, in her Buick Lacrosse on the side of I-95. Eaddy reported that another grandson, later identified as Johnson, had abducted her and her three other grandchildren, but had recently fled the scene.

Eaddy told troopers she had agreed to take Johnson to a location in the Nottingham area of Baltimore to pick up some belongings from a home there. She said when they came back out to her car, Johnson told her he was taking the car and going to New York. Eaddy was able to get into the passenger’s seat and attempted to remove the keys from the ignition. She said Johnson assaulted her and said he was taking the car to New York. Eaddy refused to leave because her other three grandchildren, cousins of the suspect, were in the back seat.

Troopers were told by Eaddy that when Johnson headed north on I-95 from I-695 in White Marsh, she used the vehicle’s On-Star and called for help. According to Eaddy, On-Star was able to shut-off the vehicle’s engine and the car coasted to a stop along northbound I-95 near Abingdon. She said the suspect fled from the car on foot into a wooded area.

State troopers from the JFK Highway Barrack issued a lookout and were joined in their search for the suspect by troopers from the Bel Air Barrack and Aviation Command, as well as Baltimore County Police K-9, and Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies. A short time later, two troopers spotted Johnson walking along Rt. 24 near Rt. 7. He was arrested without incident.

The victim and her grandchildren did not require medical treatment. She was able to return home with her car and three other grandchildren.

NEW LAW ALERT ISSUED FOR MOTOR SCOOTER AND MOPED RIDERS

(PIKESVILLE, MD) -- Maryland State Police and local law enforcement are reminding the owners and riders of motor scooters and mopeds that a new law taking effect in less than two months will make significant changes in the use of their chosen form of transportation.

On October 1, 2012, new Maryland vehicle laws will take effect that require all motor scooters and mopeds to be titled and insured, while all operators and passengers must wear a helmet and eye protection. These new requirements are in addition to the existing law that requires all motor scooter and moped operators to possess a valid driver’s license or a moped operator’s permit.

All drivers and passengers of motor scooters and mopeds will be required to wear motorcycle helmets that meet safety standards set by the United States Department of Transportation. Drivers and passengers must also wear eye protection, unless the vehicle is equipped with a windscreen.

Motor scooter and moped owners will be required to insure their vehicles. They must obtain at least the minimum vehicle liability insurance and must carry proof of the insurance with them whenever they are operating the scooter or moped.

Motor scooters and mopeds will be required to be titled by the Motor Vehicle Administration. Owners will be able to obtain titling information through the MVA website at www.mva.maryland.gov beginning October 1st. When the title is obtained, the vehicle owner will be provided with a decal that must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle.

Maryland law defines a motor scooter as a non-pedal vehicle that has a seat for the operator; has two wheels, of which one is ten or more inches in diameter; has a step through chassis; has a motor with a rating of 2.7 brake horsepower or less, or a 50 cc engine or less; and is equipped with an automatic transmission.

A moped is defined as a bicycle that is designed to be operated by human power with the assistance of a motor; is equipped with pedals that can drive the rear wheel(s); has two or three wheels, one of which is more than 14 inches in diameter; has a motor with a rating of 1.5 brake horsepower or less and a 50 cc engine or less.

The drivers of motor scooters and mopeds are required to follow the same rules of the road as bicycles. Those rules include:

-Drivers must ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practical
and safe as possible, except when:
--Making a left turn;
--Operating on a one-way street;
--Passing a stopped or slower moving vehicle;
--Avoiding pedestrians and road hazards;
--The right lane is a right turn only lane;
--Operating in a lane too narrow for a bicycle or motor scooter and another vehicle to travel safely side by side.

-Drivers may ride side by side only if flow of traffic is unimpeded;
-Drivers must exercise due care when passing;
-Headsets covering both ears, or earplugs in both ears, are not permitted;
-Scooters or mopeds may not be operated on roadways with speed limits
greater than 50 mph;
-Scooters or mopeds may not be operated at more than 30 mph;
-Drivers may not operate on a roadway where there is a smooth paved bike lane or paved shoulder available, meaning they must use the bike lane or paved shoulder instead of the roadway;
-Drivers must obey the rules of the road applicable to all vehicles.

Troopers and local law enforcement across Maryland have received training regarding the new laws. Scooter and moped drivers who violate the new law can expect to be stopped and issued traffic citations or warnings, beginning October 1.

MSP Conducts Death Investigation in Pocomoke City

NEWS RELEASE: MARYLAND STATE POLICE HOMICIDE UNIT CONDUCTS DEATH INVESTIGATION IN POCOMOKE CITY

(Pocomoke City, MD) The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation into the death of a Virginia Beach man today, after he led police on a foot chase and resisted arrest after being involved in a motor vehicle crash three days ago in Worcester County.

The deceased is identified as Yakuna McDonald, 23, of the 1200-block of North Tomcat Court in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After a motor vehicle crash and leading police on an extended foot chase on Tuesday, May 28, McDonald was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated. Three days later, he was pronounced dead.

Yakuna’s brother, Thadius McDonald, 22, of the same address was arrested and charged after the motor vehicle crash. Thadius was charged by the Pocomoke City Police Department with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

At 5:30 p.m. on May 28, officers from the Pocomoke Police Department responded to southbound Route 13, south of Brantley Road for a reported motor vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation indicates Yakuna was the driver of the car and his brother, Thadius was the passenger.

The preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit indicates that upon arrival of officers from the Pocomoke City Police Department, the brothers were observed standing near the vehicle and possibly impaired. The car they had been driving was on its roof on the southbound shoulder of Route 13.

After officers on the scene noted a controlled dangerous substance in the vehicle, police attempted to take both men into police custody. As police were arresting Thadius, Yakuna fled the scene on foot, leading police on a foot pursuit for approximately one-half mile.

When officers were able to catch up to Yakuna, he resisted arrest by kicking and fighting, injuring at least one of the arresting officers. Once handcuffed, officers attempted to carry Yakuna to a nearby police vehicle for transport, when he fell unconscious.

A state trooper from the Berlin Barrack, who had arrived on scene after the foot pursuit began, immediately performed CPR on Yakuna. An ambulance, already on scene to treat the injured officers, took over the medical treatment of Yakuna and transported him to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

During his medical treatment, Yakuna was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. Three days later, he was pronounced dead. Yakuna will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be completed to determine the cause of death.

The Pocomoke City Police is handling the motor vehicle crash investigation and the controlled dangerous substances found on the scene. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is conducting the death investigation. Investigators from the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation and the Worcester County State’s Attorney are assisting with the investigation as it continues.

Driver With Nine Guns In Truck Gets Arrested

SNOW HILL — The driver of a pickup truck pulled over for speeding on Route 113 was charged with concealed-weapons offenses after state troopers found five rifles and four handguns in his truck, five of them loaded.

State police said the traffic stop was made in the highway's southbound lanes near Public Landing Road at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The trooper who approached the truck noticed a rifle lying on the front passenger seat; when asked, the driver, Jeremiah Robert Smith, 30, of Haddock, Ga., said there was also a Glock handgun in the truck.

The trooper arrested Smith, and in a search of the truck, police found the other seven firearms, according to a news release.

Police took Smith and the weapons to the Berlin Barrack for processing; Smith was charged with one count of handgun in vehicle and one count of handgun on person, according to online court records, and detained on bond.

MD. State Police Looking For Hit and Run Driver

Maryland State Police from the Berlin Barracks are looking for the public’s help after a disabled Vietnam veteran was hit by an SUV while walking his dog on Route 113 in Pocomoke City.

Paul Hudson, 71, was walking his dog near Smitty’s Garage on Route 113 when he was hit by a black SUV and knocked out of his wheelchair. Hudson was helped back into his wheelchair, his dead dog placed into his lap and left. He was taken to PRMC in Salisbury to be treated for his injuries. Hudson’s dog was killed in the accident.

On 3/5/11 at approximately 3:00 PM, 71 year old Pocomoke resident Paul Hudson was walking his dog in the area of US 113 & Smitty’s when a black SUV struck him. Hudson is a disabled Vietnam war veteran and is confined to a wheelchair. He was knocked out of his wheelchair and his dog was killed. Unknown individuals assisted him back into his wheelchair, placed his deceased dog in his lap and left the area. The victim was transported for treatment at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Anyone who has information about this incident is requested to contact the Maryland State Police at 410-641-3101, extension “0”. The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and the Pocomoke Police Department are both helping in the investigation.

Missing Teens Vehicle Located

Two Maryland teenagers have been missing for ten days and the search for the teens now has ties to the Valley.

Rachel Reilly, 16, of Olney, MD and Nicholas Balderson,17, of Brookeville, MD have been missing since January 12.

Virginia State Police found a 1989 black Jeep Wrangler that the two were last seen riding in at a rest stop in Augusta County on Friday.

The Jeep was abandoned at the rest stop near exit 231 along I-81.

The State Police have stored the vehicle and spoke with rest stop attendants who told them the Jeep pulled in on Thursday.

Montgomery County police detectives in Maryland have taken over the investigation.

Two New Church Men Charged With Possession of Cocaine

SALISBURY -- Two New Church men were charged early today with cocaine possession after their vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation near the Wawa store on South Salisbury Boulevard, Maryland State Police said.

John Robert Roseboro, 35, and Rashaw Strand, 31, were arrested just after 2 a.m. after a search of their vehicle revealed a small amount of cocaine, troopers said.

The two men were transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center, where they were charged with possession of cocaine and paraphernalia, according to police.

Vehicle Crash With Fatalities On Route 113

NEWARK -- A driver and three passengers were fatally injured when the driver attempted to pass in a no-pass zone, according to the Maryland State Police in Berlin.

There were four vehicles involved in the crash, including a tractor-trailer that was struck by debris but had no direct contact with the accident, police said.

The accident happened just before the 5 p.m. rush hour on Route 113 near the Langmaid Road intersection in Newark, forcing the stretch to close in both directions for several hours and motorists to take alternate routes.

According to preliminary reports, the at-fault driver attempted to pass other cars on a double yellow line along the undivided highway with one lane in either direction. The MSP crash team was at the scene investigating late Monday.

The speed limit along the stretch is 55 mph.

Very little was left of the vehicle whose driver was at fault, Sgt. Christopher M. Davala said. It was the same vehicle that carried the four people who died, he said.

"The at-fault vehicle was passing other vehicles on a double yellow line," Davala said. "It was very tough to identify the vehicle."

Seven people were in the at-fault car, and three were airlifted to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, as were the drivers of two other vehicles involved, according to a report from the MSP.

In all, 10 people were involved in the crash, the sergeant also said.

"The driver of the tractor-trailer and the vehicle are in good shape," Davala said.

Authorities were withholding the names of the victims until immediate family members were notified, according to Greg Shipley, spokesman for MSP in Pikesville.

The tractor-trailer belongs to an Eastern Shore company, police said.
