Taxpayers to Fork Out $2.5 Million for Single Census Ad During Super Bowl

Taxpayers might want to pay close attention to this Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast or they'll miss Uncle Sam's 30-second, $2.5-million reminder to stand up and be counted.

Taxpayers might want to pay close attention to this Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast or they'll miss Uncle Sam's 30-second, $2.5-million reminder to stand up and be counted.

That's what the Census Bureau paid CBS to get their message notched somewhere between a National Lampoon reprisal, a weird dude with big glasses, a beer-can house and men without pants.

And, that's just a fraction of what the bureau plans to spend this year to get Americans to answer a simple, 10-question survey.

The bureau is spending $133 million between January and May -- or, more than $13 million for each of 10 questions, one of which reads: What is your telephone number? -- to publicize the national head-count. Part of that effort is the Super Bowl ad, which Kendall Johnson, a spokeswoman for the bureau, confirmed Wednesday to FoxNews.com cost $2.5 million to air. The ad, produced by actor and director Christopher Guest, also will appear in other media, Johnson said.

"We have rotations across all kinds of cable properties on network and cable TV," she said, adding that the bureau plans to advertise in 28 languages, including some as obscure as Hmong, a southeast Asian dialect.

SLIDESHOW: $132M Census Ad Campaign in 28 Languages

"What an absolute colossal waste of money," said David Williams, vice president for policy at Citizens Against Government Waste, a government watchdog group based in Washington.

"That's a lot of money to spend on a glorified public service announcement," Williams said. "While they're counting people, we're going to be counting the dollars that they're spending."

Shannon Jacobs, a spokeswoman for CBS, which airs the Super Bowl, told FoxNews.com Wednesday that advertisements for this year's game have topped $3 million.

CBS sold some ads "north of $3 million," she said, adding that there's a range in price depending on the advertisement's placement during the game.

The census, conducted every 10 years, is an official count of the nation's population mandated by the Constitution. The results are used to determine distribution of taxpayer money and the apportionment of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Every U.S. household, including those occupied by non-citizens and illegal immigrants, must be counted.

The census questionnaire -- touted by the bureau as one of the shortest forms in history -- consists of 10 questions and is intended to take no longer than 10 minutes to complete, according to the bureau's Web site.

Snow, Snow, and More Snow

During a phone conversation early this morning from my daughter in Baltimore it occured to me that our children may have never seen snow of any great depth. There are 24 inches of snow so far in Baltimore and that is the most my daughter has ever seen. A lover of snow, she was laughing at the fact she had to dig a path to walk the dog. UGH!

Alot of us that have children that have never witnessed the "great snow storm" probably have some fond memories inches upon inches of snow. I am sure someone out there has a memory or two left of life when snow storms were snow storms. Years ago there was no doppler radar, no weather man on every channel and certainly no up to the minute updates.

I can remember a time where there was no "modernization" with winter. Most folks years ago used the almanac or weather (slight at that) once, maybe twice a day. And if the winter storm came, it did just that! It came. And being children of that generation, we waited.

We waited at the window watching the snow fall and waited for the clearance from good old mom telling us we could go out and play. Twenty-four inches of snow years ago was no big deal. We needed the snow drifts because it made it that much more "explorable".

Since this is a snow day for most big people too I hope you will share some of your fondest memories of snow when you were a child. One of the things about snow that tickles me (and sledding) are the plastic sleds. Do you remember when they were all wood? And if your sled broke or you didn't have one you'd beg your mom for a cookie sheet?

What do you remember? Or if you want to just comment on this storm. Let us know what you have been doing.

American VS Foreign Vehicles

It's been a lot of discussion lately about the throttle pedal sticking and ABS brakes on Toyota's, This has sparked the American public's curiosity about the quality of vehicles, American and Foreign.

The MSM and the blogging community has took this and ran with it.

It's a no brainer, all manufactures have glitches from time to time but American vehicles are much superior to their foreign competition and I will elaborate.

First this is nothing new, automotive vehicles have had recalls since their introduction, from very minor unnoticed repairs to items that cause fires, brakes, throttle pedals, exploding gas tanks, etc. the list is endless.

In the late 70's thru the early 80's American vehicles got a bad rap as admittedly the quality of the autos produced by the big three did lack from previous years. This was due to the gas crunch of the Carter administration, (remember odd and even days for gas? I do)
They quickly regrouped and got back on track to a quality vehicle.

The U.S. government installed very strict regulations on emissions standards on all U.S. made vehicles. This forced the big three to use Chevrolet engines in Pontiac's, Oldsmobile's, Buick's, and even some Cadillac vehicles. The engines were factory de-tuned along with the added smog BS. This in itself caused some reliability problems in some of the larger vehicles and complaints from the die-hard "brand" worshiper. IE: Cadillac owners were NOT happy when they found out they had a Chevy engine. What they didn't know was they had a better engine than Cadillac ever built.

Introduce the rice-burners to the American public in the late 70's, these vehicles did not have to meet such rigorous emissions standards (except Ca) as they were at that time imported, the rice-burners nearly doubled the U.S. vehicles in fuel mileage at that time because the engine was not fitted with all the power robbing emissions garbage and it was 1/2 the cubic inches. The general public latched on to fuel pinching foreign vehicles because at the time fuel at the pump had tripled or quadrupled in price in a very short time and fuel was being rationed at the pump, RE; the odd-even days.

The new car buyer was looking to save all they could in the way of fuel prices. When window shopping for a new vehicle the foreign vehicles nearly doubled the mileage of a similar big three (or so the EPA sticker said) so the choice was simple to the penny pincher.

What was soon to come to the owner of the foreign POS they had no idea. When their prized fuel sipping rice-burner became a little aged and needed a repair it would cost 5 times the price to repair than the U.S. vehicle. They needed a $400.00 timing belt every 50,000 miles as routine maintenance when people had never heard of a timing belt, most went neglected and the devastation done to the tiny interference engine when the belt snapped was extremely expensive to repair. Most people didn't even think about it, but ALL the money they had saved in fuel plus much more just went out the window for the high-price repair of their beloved foreign fuel sipper. How long does one have to drive to save even 100 bucks in fuel? (think about it)

The above paragraph still reigns true today, it cost much more to drive a foreign vehicle than a big three produced vehicle. The savings in fuel will be overridden with the simplest of repairs and normal maintenance not to mention the high priced O-rings they call tires.

Then we have the people that talk about how many miles a rice-burner will run above a U.S. built vehicle.... Bull shit.. I have been a mechanic all my life, working for a pay check repairing vehicles at the age 12 for Ruth Donaway when she was in the building that's now occupied by Billy Ward and have done my whole life since.

Any U.S. manufactured vehicle will out perform, out last, and cost much, much less to repair and maintain. For example, an alternator for a 2000 Mercedes cost $171.00 from Advance Auto (rebuilt junk part) and a alternator for a 2000 Impala (comparable U.S. car) cost $45.00 and the labor to install the alternator on the Mercedes will be at least treble the cost and probably more, so how much fuel does one need to save to offset this. Get the picture?

It is also a myth that foreign vehicles will run more miles than the U.S. iron. Way back in the 70's it was not uncommon to see a cheap Plymouth Valiant with an inline 6 cyl engine to have 300,000 miles and going strong. I have an American made vehicle right now that is approaching 400,000 miles and runs as good as new.

As the refining of oils improved, the introduction of synthetic lubricants, and the technology in machining,... today's engines will easily double the running mileage of yesteryear's and very easily surpass that of ANY rice-burner.

The interior components of foreign vehicles are also much less of the quality of any U.S. vehicle, the rice-burners interior simply fall apart, recycled plastic that has already aged cracks and deteriorates in a few short years leaving the rice-burner just a mess inside. Look around at the classic car cruise-ins and shows, how many classic Mercedes, Toyota's, Datsun's, Honda's do you see? NONE. Why? Because they just cannot stand the test of time like American muscle.

I often wonder if the people that brag on their rice-burner realize that their vehicle was assembled here in the good'ol U.S.of A. (parts made in Mexico) and it's not the nuts and bolts that fall out, in the long run the car just falls apart and cost 10 times the amount to repair.

You can keep your fuel sippin', gas pedal stickin' brakes not workin' plastic coated, recycled beer can rice-burner.

I'll keep my American Iron. And don't complain when your throttle sticks or your brakes don't work and you hit me and total your your rice-rocket and I just wave and drive away without a scratch.

Snow-cream

Oh yea!! I get to make some more snow cream, and snow shake mmmmm, mmmmm, good.

1 gallon of fresh snow

1 egg

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup condensed milk (cream)

4 tsp real vanilla (or to taste I like it heavy)

1/2 tsp brown sugar

1 pinch table salt

beat the egg vanilla and cream well, add the sugars and salt and mix.
add the snow 2 cups at a time and mix well, add more snow for desired consistency or if it's to thick add equal parts of cream and sugar to desired consistency and taste.

For the snow shake, just put the prepared snow cream in a blender and blend on high until it will move through a straw.

Enjoy

The Snow is Here AGAIN!! Need Help??

As with the snow storm last week I will be out and about assisting stuck - stranded motorist and local civil servants.

If you have to go out please be very careful and drive with caution, leave a lot of extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, if you have a 4x4 don't think just because it's a 4x4 you can drive it like you stole it in this weather.

The best practice in heavy snow while driving is to drive like you have an egg between your foot and the accelerator/brake peddles and you don't want to crack the egg.

I will be out looking for people/civil servants that are stuck, stranded or in ditches to give them assistance in this very cold weather.

If you are in the local area and need a push/pull or even a ride to work give me a call @ (410) 726-6925 I cannot promise that I will be right around the corner but I'll be there if you need me. For rides to work (Nurses/Doctors/Civil Servants will take priority).

Prepare Your Vehicle For the Snow

A few little tips so you don't forget.

We are not used to such accumulation of the white stuff here on the Shore so here's a couple things to remember.

If you have a vehicle that the wiper blades will fold up and stand on their own (most do) fold them up while your vehicle is parked, that way you can scrape the windshield without the wipers stuck to the windshield in the morning and it's easier to clear the snow/ice.

NEVER turn your vehicle off before you turn off the wipers because when you go to restart your vehicle the wipers will try to run and may be stuck, even if you turn them off and they are not in the park position the wiper motor will still run and try to park the wipers and damage the wipers and/or the motor.

While the snow is still relatively wet and not much accumulation back your vehicle into your driveway as close to the surface street as possible. If you must park on the street remember the snow plows will plow a large bank of snow that may completely render your vehicle immovable.

If you must go out take some blankets, extra coat, gloves, shoes/boots and socks in case you get wet or happen to breakdown, when a vehicle is not running it's not heating and at some point any vehicle can and will breakdown.

Have a flashlight, water, and a cell phone, even if you do not have cell phone service calling 911 on a non-activated phone will still work.

And of course if you do not have to travel stay home where it's warm and safe.

Radar Detector Bill Advances in the General Assembly

Seems that Virginia's radar ban that was enacted in the 1970's may be on the way out

On Thursday a bill advanced, with an 11-8 vote in the General Assembly. Virginia is the last state that still bans the use of detectors in vehicles. Many opponets say that allowing radar detectors in vehicles will encourabe drivers to speed up.

Now I don't know how they can possibly go any faster on any road down here. But it sure will give drivers a heads up on getting busted for speeding! At the rate of speed some of these drivers are going I'm not quite sure they'll be able to slow down.

And don't think you're fooling anyone. If an officer sees a radar detector or any part of one in your car he will stop you. And it's quite possible he will ticket you.

Presidential Plane Flies Over Hampton Roads

Did you know that on Wednesday the presidential plane made an appearance over the Hampton Roads area?

Sometime during the afternoon on February 3 the plane made a touch and go landing at the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport. According to a spokesman this happens at least once a month. It's called "training".

Training? Hmmm...... Well, I'm going to show some stupidity here and tell you I don't know if I would be comfortable flying with a pilot that needed practice once a month with one of my many presidential planes. And I'm going to further my stupidity today and ask why?

Also, how much does this cost the American taxpayers?
Does this hamper Hampton Roads in any way for the few minutes the presidential plane makes contact with a runway and then flies off?
Do the major airline pilots get practice with the jets before they fly hundreds of people all around the world 24/7?

And here's something I didn't know: The presidential plane is only referred to Air Force One when the president is on board. So?

Medal of Honor recipient Bud Day Speaks of Torture

I got shot down over N Vietnam in 1967, a Sqdn. Commander.
After I returned in 1973...I published 2 books that dealt a lot
with "real torture" in Hanoi . Our make believe president is
branding our country as a bunch of torturers when he has
no idea what torture is.

As for me, put thru a mock execution because I would not respond...
pistol whipped on the head...same event.. Couple of days later...
hung by my feet all day. I escaped and a couple of weeks later, I got
shot and recaptured. Shot was OK...what happened afterwards was not.

They marched me to Vinh...put me in the rope trick, trick...almost
pulled my arms out of the sockets. Beat me on the head with a
little wooden rod until my eyes were swelled shut, and my unshot,
unbroken hand a pulp.

Next day hung me by the arms...rebroke my right wrist...wiped
out the nerves in my arms that control the hands...rolled my fingers
up into a ball. Only left the slightest movement of my L forefinger.
So I started answering with some incredible lies.

Sent me to Hanoi strapped to a barrel of gas in the back of a truck.

Hanoi..on my knees....rope trick again.. Beaten by a big fool.

Into leg irons on a bed in Heartbreak Hotel.

Much kneeling--hands up at Zoo.

Really bad beating for refusing to condemn Lyndon Johnson.

Several more kneeling events. I could see my knee bone thru
kneeling holes.

There was an escape from the annex to the Zoo. I was the Senior
Officer of a large building because of escape...they started a mass
torture of all commanders.

I think it was July 7, 1969...they started beating me with a car fan
belt. In first 2 days I took over 300 strokes...then stopped counting
because I never thought I would live thru it.

They continued day-night torture to get me to confess to a non-existent
part in the escape. This went on for at least 3 days. On my knees....
fan belting...cut open my scrotum with fan belt stroke. opened up
both knee holes again. My fanny looked like hamburger...I could not
lie on my back.

They tortured me into admitting that I was in on the escape...and
that my 2 room-mates knew about it.

The next day I denied the lie.

They commenced torturing me again with 3- 6- or 9 strokes of
the fan belt every day from about July 11 or 12rh..to 14 October
1969. I continued to refuse to lie about my roommates again.

Now, the point of this is that our make-believe
president has declared to the world that we (U.S..) are a bunch of
torturers...Thus it will be OK to torture us next time when they
catch us....because that is what the U.S. does.

Our make-believe president is a know nothing fool who thinks
that pouring a little water on some one's face, or hanging a pair of
women's pants over an Arabs head is TORTURE. He is a meathead.

I just talked to MOH holder Leo Thorsness, who was also in my squadron,
in jail...as was John McCain...and we agree that McCain does
not speak for the POW group when he claims that Al Gharib was
torture...or that "water boarding" is torture.

Our president and those fools around him who keep bad mouthing
our great country are a disgrace to the United States . Please pass
this info on to Sean Hannity. He is free to use it to point out the
stupidity of the claims that water boarding...which has no after
effect...is torture.
If it got the Arab to cough up the story about how he planned the attack on the twin towers in NYC ...
hurrah for the guy who poured the water.

Finally a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, 'Got stuck, huh?'

The truck driver says, 'No, I was delivering this bridge and I ran out of gas.'

SMART ASS ANSWER OF THE YEAR 2009!!

A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam. 'Now class, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!'

A smart-ass student in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, 'What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?'

The entire class is reduced to laughter and snickering. When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, 'Well, I guess you'd have to write the exam with your other hand.'

1950 Chevy with 437 actual miles

1950 Chevy with 437 actual milesThey ARE still out there somewhere! ! !1950 Chevrolet Club Coupe 437 original, actual miles, only 3 owners.Check out the dealer installed "oil filter", the rusty carb, and you can even see the spark plugs if they need changed.

437 Actual milesPurchased new by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Trueblood of Modesto. Shortly after purchasing this car, Mr. Trueblood took a day off to go fishing. While waiting for the "big one" to bite he witnessed a woman fall out of her boat. Mr. Trueblood jumped in to help only to fall victim of a fatal heart attack. Mrs.. Trueblood returned the car home and placed it in the garage for the next 12 years. The odometer reading at that time (1962) was 413 miles. Mrs. Trueblood lived next door to a used car lot owned by Mr. William E. Wilson (now 81 years old). Mr. Wilson spoke with her frequently and often told her he would like to buy the car for himself to keep. In 1962 the time had come. Mrs. Trueblood told Mr.Wilson she needed a car for her bookkeeper who didn't really care for the ol' Chevy and would prefer a Rambler. No problem. Mr. Wilson went down to the local Rambler dealer and bought a brand new one for $1,650.00 ($100.00 over cost) and made the swap.He then took the car home and parked it with 433 actual miles. And there it sat for the next45 years, occasionally being started and moved in and out of the garage.

In 2007 Mr. Wilson decided to sell the car and started spreading the word around Modesto that the ol' Chevy with 433 miles on it was for sale. Many had heard about the car, but hardly anyone had ever laid eyes on it. In fact, according to Mr.Wilson he believes he only showed the car to about 5 people in 45 years.

Word spread quickly about the car and soon a buyer arrived ready and willing to pay the $60,000 asking price. When Mr. Wilson told me the story of this car he complained heavily of the "capital gains" tax he was required to pay and wished he had never sold it. As of this writing, Mr. Wilson is still alive and well in Modesto and can verify the miles and originality of this car. Simply put, this is a true 100% factory original survivor (that includes the air in the tires). This ol' Chevy now has 437 original miles and is most likely the world's lowest mileage 1950 Chevy.

1950 Chevy 437 actual miles!

Smart Driving??

On Tuesday a 61 year old driver
was stopped while driving in the HOV lane on the Long Island Expressway.

An alert deputy sheriff noticed that the "other occupant" in the vehicle with with long brown hair, wearing a scarf and jacket, was also wearing sunglasses. The cars visor had also been pulled down to protect the passenger from the sun.

What made the Deputy Sheriff Robert Howard suspicious? It was an overcast day. The officer pulled the vehicle over to find the second passenger was a life sized mannequin!

K.A. Frascinell, of Mt. Sinai, L.I., was issued a $135.00 ticket and two points on her license.

The half body mannequin was fully dressed in a long, dark wig, scarf, blazer and matching shirt with a belt.

Nice try, Ms. Frascinell!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO ROBIN!!!!!!!

Seniors -- don't mess with them, they've been around!

Two young businessmen in Florida were sitting down for a break
in their soon-to-be new store in the shopping mall. As yet, the store
wasn't ready, with only a few shelves and display racks set up.
One said to the other, "I'll bet that any minute now some senior
is going to walk by, put his face to the window, and ask what we're selling."

Sure enough, just a moment later, a curious senior gentleman walked
up to the window, looked around intensely and rapped on the glass,
then in a loud voice asked, "What are you sellin' here?"

One of the men replied sarcastically, "We're selling ass-holes."
Without skipping a beat, the old timer said, "You're doing well. Only two left."

Your Social Security

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it.

Be sure and show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts!!!

Our Social Security;

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social

Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be

Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65%

3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and, Under Johnson the money was moved to

The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Under Clinton & Gore

Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put

away' -- you may be interested in the following:

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate..

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -----

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That's right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

------------ -- ------------ --------- ----- ------------ --------- ---------

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

If enough people read this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn't so.

Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.

More spam from Kratovil

Ya gotta love this one, Frank sends out this spam mail talking about how he likes to "rein-in spending" then adds a post script on information and learning how to receive government college funding.

I guess we "regular people" weren't supposed to pick up on that.

Dear Friend,
Last week, President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, which included a call to freeze discretionary spending for three years. As a member of the Blue Dog Coalition I have been a strong supporter of discretionary spending caps, and I applaud the President’s effort to rein in spending. However, as I stated in an op-ed published last week, I believe that spending caps are just one component of a broader reform agenda that Congress should pass in 2010.
We need comprehensive budget reform, starting with this discretionary spending freeze but also including a restoration of pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) budget rules, a budget commission empowered to reform entitlement programs, earmark reforms to improve accountability and transparency, and strong budget enforcement tools to ensure a fiscally responsible federal budget. I am committed to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle on this comprehensive budget reform effort, because I firmly believe we desperately need to restore fiscal discipline in Washington.
Families here in Maryland understand that budgets are about setting priorities and making the tough choices to live within our means. For the past decade, the federal government has failed to live by that same set of rules. And while it is true that extraordinary steps are sometimes needed in tough times to get the economy moving again, uncontrolled spending growth cannot be allowed to continue year after year. With the economy now showing small but encouraging signs of a turnaround, we must take meaningful action to reduce our deficit and put us back on a path toward fiscal sustainability.

With warm regards,

Rep. Frank M. Kratovil, Jr.
